Contact problems

Phenomena of contact between deformable bodies abound in industry and everyday life. Contact of braking pads with wheels, tires with roads, pistons with skirts are just a few simple examples. Because of the importance of contact processes, a considerable effort has been made in its modeling and numerical simulations. Modern discretization techniques are very often based on flexible nonconforming approaches. Based on mixed variational formulations with dual Lagrange multipliers, our research focuses on nonconforming discretizations and optimal a priori error estimates. The main advantage of dual Lagrange multipliers is that fast and efficient monotone multigrid methods can be generalized to multibody contact problems.
